Silver Brooke Golf Club:

A Shot Maker's Stretch

Posted by Alistair Orr

The Silver Brooke Golf Club and its surrounding sleepy residential community lay just outside the western fences of Canadian Forces Base Borden in the town of Lisle.  The layout has two contrasting nines which offer completely different playing experiences.  The front nine is a Kevin Holmes design and is routed through a forest of mature maples, pines, birch and poplar trees while the back nine is laid out over wide open spaces in the manner of a links style course. The Silver Brooke namesake winds its way throughout the property and plays a major part in the shot making decision process on numerous holes. With minimal elevation change on the entire 190 acre piece it is an extremely walker friendly experience.

Feature Holes Descriptions:

The key to scoring well at Silver Brooke is to start strong and try to get a birdie or two in hand before reaching the sixth tee because the stretch from the sixth through eighth holes will erode early gains if you don’t keep your wits about you. Holes 6, 7 and 8 are carved out of forest and bush with hazards all around.

At 422 yards, the gentle dogleg right par 4 sixth hole requires a long drive down the middle avoiding water hazards and bush on both sides. A purely struck mid-to-long iron is necessary on the approach to find the correct portion of the long narrow sloping green that is protected by a large front left bunker and mounding right.  Its bombs away off the seventh tee on this beastly 563 yard par 5. The fairway is fairly wide but the wild drive will find thick bush and penalty shots on either side. The conservative player will then play up short of the hazard that crosses directly in front of the green leaving a short pitch for their third shot over the babbling brook to set up a birdie attempt. The eighth hole is a short par 4 that doglegs sharply to the right and requires a controlled left to right tee shot. An aggressive play off the tee risks driving through the fairway and finding a water hazard that skirts the fairway from the 150 mark up to the green. The small green complex is shallow with a swale in the middle and a tiny shelf back left making it tricky to get close to the target with the approach. Birdies can be had on this stretch but disaster also looms and in the end a run of pars here will see you gaining shots on the field.
