Stunning Second Hole
Tannenbaum Golf Club:
Secluded Golf in Arkansas' Ozark Mountains.

The expansive Greer's Ferry Lake is made up of hundreds of bays and peninsulas formed when the Little Red River was damned back in the 1960's. It created a vast reservoir that is now a highly coveted clustering of wilderness home sites built along former bluffs and ridges of the flooded mountain valleys. One of these former mountain ridges is now a beautiful shoreline paradise and home to Tannenbaum Golf Club. Opened in 1999, this John Floyd design feels like a secluded forest setting with some interesting features utilizing massive stones quarried locally.
The collection of par 3 holes at Tannenbaum are filled with quality of design and for at least a pair of them Wow Factor off the charts. After getting beaten up on the beastly opening hole you arrive at the daunting second hole. With tee decks and green built atop thousands of thick natural stones the visual is striking. The long iron or hybrid tee shot must traverse a vast pond to reach the elevated green which slopes drastically from front to back. Keeping your ball below the hole is a well heeded suggestion. The 8th plays across a subtle valley to a green ringed by stately pines. Figure eight shaped and protected by a fronting bunker on the right, the safe play is to aim for the centre and putt to the edge. Should you fall short of your target a tough up and down is left.
The 12th is the epitome of a heroic hole. The series of hillside tee decks provide a glimpse of your target what seems hundreds of feet below. Carved out of a rugged creek valley the wide and narrow putting surface sits perched above the creek and leaves very little room for error. The advice of two clubs less was much appreciated, as most would have no idea what club would be needed to navigate this exacting beauty. The final short hole is number 16. The tee shot must traverse a naturalized hollow and climb to an elevated target. The deep green is filled with humps and swales making a two putt par a rewarding feat.

Tannenbaum Golf Club could easily fall into the "middle of nowhere," conversation. It's secluded peninsula setting filled with stark elevation changes and very few signs of civilization make for a challenging yet peaceful round. A solid collection of traditional holes are blended well with a few with WOW designs to make the drive and all day golf experience at Tannenbaum a worthy addition to any Natural State Golf Trail itinerary.
