The Ledges of St. George:

Red Rock Golf in Beautiful Southern Utah.

Posted by: Rick Parnham

A short drive north of the city of St. George, Utah, sits The Ledges of St. George, a sprawling, master-planned residential community. The community surrounds a championship golf experience and has become a superb addition to the Red Rock Golf Trail since opening in 2006. Formerly known as Valderra Golf Club at Ledges, this premiere, public play option provides a spectacular setting for both a challenging round and for connecting with the stunning natural backdrop of Snow Canyon State Park.

The Ledges Golf Club is a Matt Dye design, nephew of the famous Uncle Pete and can best be described as a having two remarkably distinct nines. The opening holes play to the east, sitting atop a gently rolling landscape. Routed with generous fairways and subtle mounding, this side presents a very playable beginning to the round. The back nine takes you under Utah Route 18 to spectacular ridges and valleys with a stunning overlook of the outcrops of Snow Canyon and the remarkable red rock formations found there.

Feature Holes Descriptions:

The second hole is a creative, lengthy par 3. Playing well in excess of 200 yards from the tips, the relatively flat landscape has been painted with a splash of traditional old world design. The green has a significant hog's-back ridge separating the front from back. Find yourself on the wrong side of the ridge and a knee-knocking three-putt is a possibility. The 13th is the first of a stretch of three consecutive, short par 4 holes all filled with character. The dogleg left hole is best played by favoring the left side with your drive. The fairway falls steeply to the green from the landing area and the green presents three tiers sloping from front to back.

Rugged Desert Beauty

The 14th hole plays as a straightaway par 4, where the drive must flirt with a bunker on the left to provide the best route.  This side gives a less obstructed view from which to attack the long and narrow green, framed by a large bunker on the left and perched on a small bluff overlooking beautiful canyons. The 15th is a risk / reward short par 4 with a fairway resembling an island in the midst of the desert washes. A long iron or hybrid is all that's needed to find the plateau landing spot. The second shot requires a deft touch for the green is a rollercoaster filled with slopes and swales. Finding the correct shelf is critical to a reasonable chance at par.

The short drive out of town to this oasis tucked between ridges and peaks is certainly a "must do" on any Red Rock Golf Trail visit. A terrific blend of playability, challenge, and natural beauty, the course is a memorable time well spent. Looking to the future, the ownership is planning some design changes to enhance the routing and playing experience, to position the course for many further decades of great golf in St. George. Take the time to include The Ledges as the back-nine alone is worth the visit.
