The Algonquin Golf Club:
History, Beauty and Challenge all in One Place.
The Bay of Fundy is home to some of the most picture-postcard settings in all of Canada. Seaside towns, natural landscapes carved by glaciers and erosion along with record tides dot this world famous destination. St. Andrew’s by the Sea is one of those cute-as-a-button locations. Home to The Algonquin Golf Club, a Thomas McBroom remake of a Donald Ross original dating back to 1894. This seaside layout is a great blend of parkland and windswept coastal holes. The course enjoys remarkable views of Passamaquoddy Bay, the quaint town site, its wharf and the state of Maine to the west. Completely redesigned in 2000, the new layout uses some of the original corridors and green sites, but plays along new coastal bluffs with some of the most scenic holes in Atlantic Canada. The Algonquin Club, boasting the oldest clubhouse in Canada (currenty perched beside the 18th tee), is steeped in history and stunning visuals. The post round bite and beverage at the new clubhouse must be enjoyed on the patio for a view you will not soon forget.

Feature Holes Descriptions:
The opening nine at Algonquin is a mix of old and new, with some of the original Ross design corridors being incorporated in the McBroom rework. Hole 2 is a terrific dogleg right par 4 that puts a premium on a well placed tee shot. Left of center is the best play to take the fronting pond on the right out of the line of play with your approach. The second shot must avoid the watery grave but anything long or errant will find deep nasty rough circling the green, making par a difficult feat. The sixth is a shortest par 4 on the frontside, but don’t let the length fool you. A dogleg left playing uphill to a plateau green with a devilish false front, precision is the best option here, rather than risking the fairway and greenside traps. The water holes on the back are both about overcoming the sheer distraction of the setting. Par 3 number 12 is a stunning beauty. Playing downhill to a green perched amongst 4 traps and hanging on a bluff above the Bay. Number 13 is a risk / reward par 5 that has all kinds of choice. The aggressive player can flirt with the left side trees to shorten the hole leaving a long iron second. A conservative play may bring the saltwater into play if the tee shot is pushed a little too far right. This snaking hole is as much demanding as beautifully distracting.
