Cacapon Resort State Park:

A Delightful Robert Trent Jones Sr. Mountain Layout

Posted by Alistair Orr

Cacapon Resort State is located on the rolling foothills of the eastern slopes of Cacapon Mountain in Berkley Springs West Virginia and is the home to a wonderfully playable Robert Trent Jones Sr design. Opened for play in 1974 Jones Sr. routed this beauty along the base of a ridge at the foot of the mountain and is characterized by narrow contoured fairways lined with mature hardwoods and small well defended green sites.

Cacapon and her sister courses at Canaan Valley, Pipestem Resort, Stonewall Resort and Twin Falls are part of the West Virginia State Park System. Canaan and Pipestem were both designed by Canadian Geoffrey Cornish, Stonewall is an Arnold Palmer Signature Course while at Twin Falls Geoffrey Cornish designed the original 9 and George Cobb assembled the second nine.

Feature Holes Descriptions:

The dogleg right par 5 third hole rises gently making it play slightly longer than the yardage advertised on the card. The fairway also cants from left to right making it a tricky driving hole and with the entire right side red staked be mindful not to over challenge the inside of the dogleg. The long narrow green is protected by bunkers all around making reaching the putting surface in two shots a tremendous feat. Hole 7 is a long tree lined dogleg left par 4 with a lone bunker at the inside corner which lays waiting to ambush the brave sole who tries to challenge the corner. Care must be taken on the approach to place the ball below the pin for the green slopes severely back to front. However the mishit shot short will find one of the three large bunkers protecting this elevated green complex. The back nine opener is a wonderful short par 4 with the elevated teeing ground looking down over a pond then the fairway sweeps back up a steep hill bending to the right past several bunkers, strategically placed in the landing area, to a small undulating putting surface. The key to making birdie on this hole is choosing the correct club selection on the blind approach up the hill to the green.
