The Club at Irish Creek:

A Davis Love III Treat.

Posted by Alistair Orr

Located in Kannapolis on the northern edge of Greater Charlotte in a charming residential enclave the Club at Irish Creek is home to a wonderful Davis Love III signature design. Routed through mature forests and along the edges of a pristine lake this extremely walkable layout rises and fall over the gently rolling terrain. Unlike many residential golf developments there are no internal houses so you don’t feel like you are playing in someone’s back yard. With a course rating of 74.3 (135 slope) from the back tees (which stretches out to over 7000 yards) the Championship tees are not for the faint of heart  but at the same time the course offers sensible distances from the other three tee decks making this an ideal members course for players of all abilities.

Feature Holes Descriptions:

The key to scoring at Irish Creek is to get off to a fast start and try to get a few birdies in the bank by the time you finish the eighth hole for the beastly stretch of four par fours, 9 through 12, will try to claw back your gains.

The dogleg left 9th hole wraps around Lake Kannapolis and demands a nervy drive long down the left center leaving a gentle downhill lie for the long approach to a green site protected by nastiness all around. Holes 10, 11 and 12 are carved out of the hardwood forests and are as beautiful as they are tough. Perhaps my favourite hole on the course, #10 requires a drive favouring the right side to avoid the drop off to the creek that cross diagonally left to right in the landing area. A purely struck mid-to-long iron is necessary on the approach to find the correct portion of this two tiered green. The 11th hole is similar in nature to the 10th, however the crossing creek comes at you faster so driver may not be the prudent play and the green complex is a sideways horseshoe with swales making proper distance control paramount. The closing hole on this demanding stretch is a long dogleg left with a bunker in the inside corner begging to be challenged. The dance floor is guarded by a bunker front left, false front and collection area right. Four 4’s marked on the card through here will definitely separate you from the pack.
