Black Diamond Golf Club:

A Decade of Great Golf in the Kawarthas.

The Kawartha Region is one of Ontario's most treasured charms. Dotted with lakes and rivers and filled with historic cottage country towns, this area straddling the Trent-Severn has drawn settlers and tourists for decades.  A playground for the outdoor lover, the region is also home to a plentiful array of terrific golf experiences. One of those locales is Black Diamond Golf Club, located almost mid-way between Oshawa and Peterborough along the Highway 115 corridor in Pontypool. From the highway you can see the welcoming gate and opening holes of this creative test of golf calling you to this terrific combination of challenge and value. Black Diamond opened in 2004 seeing many accolades bestowed on the Jason Miller design. Routed with two very different and distinctive nines, the opening holes are windswept and open while the back side traverses ridges, wetlands and forests. Black Diamond's routing is creative, challenging and filled with many memorable holes and stunning vistas.

Feature Holes Descriptions:

Longer, more open and playable, the front side provides you with some room for error as you work the glitches out of the swing. The course opens with a gargantuan par 5 that sets the tone for what's to come. The Second Hole is rated as the most difficult on the course and for good reason. A brutally long par 4 paying uphill to a landing area pinched by bunkers left and right, the hole requires a well placed drive and an accurate long iron or hybrid to the raised green protected short right by a large bunker. The inward nine opens with a hole that tops the "Wow Factor" chart. Perched high atop a bluff with miles of rolling woodlands in the distance the 10th tee presents a dogleg left par 5 that seems to fall off the face of the Earth. The tee shot requires some deep thought calculating what club is needed to shape the drive to avoid all the disaster through the fairway. A daring drive that cuts the corner will leave a long iron in your hand for a terrific birdie chance.

Hole 11 is a stunning example of the short par 4. Played around or over a vast pond, options abound with the tee ball. The safe play is left to the wide part of the fairway and short of the cavernous traps lining the left side of the hole. Those playing aggressively might want to take aim at the flag leaving a flip wedge in your hand if you can carry the pond and avoid the OB right. The final short hole Number 14 is a beauty. Playing downhill the long iron or hybrid tee shot must avoid pot bunkers left and a thicket of trees short right. A par here is well earned.

With a moniker like Black Diamond one would expect a routing filled with slopes and bumps. This design lives up to billing with the wild ride presented on the back nine. Demanding accuracy and distance control, your round will leave you with memories of beautiful vistas and a challenging routing.
